Just one week after the overall victory at the Hockenheimring, Frikadelli Racing had the next round of the Prototype Cup Germany season on the programme. In their home race at the Nürburgring, Klaus Abbelen and Felipe Laser secured fifth place overall in the Trophy classification as well as victory in Saturday's race with the #30 Ligier JS P320. The driver duo finished the second race on Sunday in eighth place due to minor technical problems. In the early stages of the race, they had led the field at times.
‘Overall, it was a good weekend for us, even if we had hoped for a bit more in terms of results on our home track. We were satisfied with fifth place on Saturday and the points we scored for the championship, but unfortunately we were unable to maintain the pace at the back after a strong opening phase on Sunday. However, we have analysed the technical problem so that we can draw on our full resources again for the season finale at the Sachsenring,’ said Team Principal Klaus Abbelen.
Abbelen started the first race on Saturday from ninth on the grid and initially approached the race rather conservatively on a damp track.
Although he initially dropped back to twelfth place in the overall standings as a result, he handed the car over to his team-mate Laser after his stint without a scratch and back in the top 10.Laser turned up the heat in the second part of the race and fought some impressive duels with the competition. At the end of the race to catch up, he finished fifth overall and Abbelen won the Trophy classification.
On race Sunday, the starting position was extremely good with second place on the grid.Starting driver Laser put the #30 Ligier JS P320 straight into the lead and defended it successfully over the first few laps.In the further course of his stint, however, the man from Leipzig had to let an opponent pass him again. Due to a minor technical problem, Laser was no longer able to keep up with the pace of the leader towards the end of his stint. Until the black-and-white chequered flag dropped, these problems continued, with the result that Abbelen in the LMP3 car was relegated to eighth place.
‘We have already ticked off the Nürburgring weekend within the team and are now looking ahead to the Sachsenring, where the final race of the season will take place at the beginning of September. Our aim is to shine there once again and, if possible, achieve another top result. Our team is ready in any case and did a great job again at the Nürburgring,’ continued Abbelen.
